This dissertation questions the classification of the novel Juliano Pavollini as an autobiographical novel, since the narrative congruencies between the life of the empirical author, the person who signs the cover of a work, and the life of the autodiegetic narrator, Juliano Pavollini, are superficial. Because of this superficiality, we defend the idea of Tezzi's work being a fictional autobiography, a story about the protagonist, unrelated to the author's life. To resolve the issue, we start from the historical path of self-writing, mainly autobiographies, which serve as a narrative template for fictionalized narratives or “romances of the self”, according to Manuel Alberca (2007). Still on the history of autobiography, we discuss whether or not autobiographical texts belong to the fictional field. For analysis purposes, we question the reliability and verifiability of the reports as the main conditions for bringing these self-narratives closer to the referential field. Subsequently, we explain the importance of the author, based on these four stages: emergence; crisis; death and return. This revival of the authorial figure in fictional texts contributes to the studies of romances of the self, based on romantic and ambiguous pacts, a meeting of elements of reality and fiction. Regarding these fictional narratives of the self, we investigated the three modalities: autofiction; autobiographical novel and fictional autobiography. In the last part of this dissertation, we studied the concept of unfaithful narrator, by Wayne Booth (1980), as well as unreliable, in Juliano Pavollini. Finally, we excluded the classifications of autofiction and autobiographical novel in Tezzi's work, as there are very few references to the life of Cristóvão Tezza. Therefore, we define such a fictionalized narrative as a fictional autobiography, as there is no onomastic identity between author, narrator and character. Thus, the story related is that of a fictitious individual.
