The Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) created the Environmental Sciences Area in 2011, in order to acknowledge and stimulate graduate programs that deal with the inseparability of antropic and natural systems, given the complexity of the associations between humans and environments. The relationship between society and environment is usually seen under the perspective of technical relations, without any further debate about the social relations, therefore, among humans. Facing the socioenvironmental crisis within the capitalist system, the analysis of the conditions of social relations is indispensable to the understanding of the technical relations. Under these circumstances, some questions arise to Environmental Sciences: does the hegemonic manner of generating knowledge by means of an analytical-reductionist scientific paradigm help to achieve the objectives of the area? Does the Environmental Sciences academic formation and the production of knowledge head towards new manners of generating knowledge embodying contradictions, emergencies and uncertainties? Does the Environmental Sciences field produce critical knowledge about the social relations under capitalism and present alternatives beyond the capital? Is capitalism sustainable? May capitalism become sustainable? In view of the above, this thesis presents a study about the academic formation in Environmental Sciences in Brazil, specifically about how this area has contributed to the generation of complex, critical and propositional knowledge. Besides, the empirical research carried out in this thesis has verified how the Graduate Programs in the area of Environmental Sciences in Brazil, in their Doctorate Courses, have discussed the relations between capitalism and the environment. Using the methodological procedure of the Thematic Content Analysis were analyzed the description of the objectives, of the research lines e and of the obligatory courses of the Brazilian Doctorate programs in Environmental Sciences according to the data available at Plataforma Sucupira/Coleta CAPES and the program s websites. It was verified that although, in general, the programs express their intent of pursuing interdisciplinarity and sustainable development, there are still great challenges in what concerns the debates about social relations in socio-environmental issues. At last, the present thesis suggests practices that could be adopted by the programs in order to promote a more reflexive academic formation in matters of the production of the socio-environmental knowledge in a complexsystemic perspective and, therefore, promote more capitalism critical thesis and propositions of systemic alternatives, objectivizing the construction of sustainable societies in its various dimensions.
