Comando Vermelho was the first criminal organization in the country. Created in the 70s, the group controls territory and drug trafficking in several areas of Rio de Janeiro. Although there are studies on the topic, there is little information and documents from the organization's initial years. The present work aims to analyze a series of letters from Comando Vermelho, which were written between the 1980s and 1990s, in the Ilha Grande prison. These correspondences were intercepted and stored for years by a former prison employee, and will be used for the first time in this work. The work presents an overview of the documents, examining them and reflecting on relevant aspects of their structure - such as content, form, authorship and recipients, as well as when and for what purpose they were obtained and written. This investigation, which is part of the research project “Memory and Violence in Ilha Grande”, is based on an interdisciplinary approach. Historical sources, document analysis and in-depth interviews were used.
