This master thesis consists on a research on O Globo's journalism about affirmative actions in Brazilian public universities. The chronological clipping for the newspaper analysis has as its starting point the year of 2003 when the first beneficiary students were admitted at Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) and its finishing line is the year of 2012 when the ex-president Dilma Rousseff sanctioned the Quotas Law for federal higher education institutions. Through the analysis of the newspaper editorials, daily news and opinion pieces, this research discusses the official point of view of the Marinhos vehicle, the debate among the main columnists and the construction of common reality images that surrounded that kind of public policy. Then, we were able to notice how the newspaper has helped the shaping of a certain consensus on this proposition. Moreover, the analysis of the opinion pieces made a discussion on how History came out on the speeches that commented it possible. In our understanding, the racial quotas politics for the universities led to a debate on several aspects of Brazil s social reality, especially when it comes to race relations and social inequality. The theoretical references here are various, but we highlight the contributions of Italian philosopher Antonio Gramsci and his theories about hegemony and the making of consensus.
