This work has the objective of thinking to masters degree in education starting from the criteria of the evaluation trienal accomplished by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior(Capes). Para to accomplish the proposed objective we divided the work in three chapters. In the first chapter, starting from the study of the definition of the nature of the masters degree, contained in the Parecer no. 977/65, we noticed that an interlacement exists among the path of the university and of the masters degree in Brazil. In that sense, we made a report of the Brazilian higher education with emphasis in the interlacement that exists between the path of the university and the path of the masters degree. That interlacement, in a general way, contributed for we noticed the process of verticalização of the higher education with the separation between teaching and research, the first under responsibility of the degree courses and Monday under the responsibility of the courses of masters degree stricto sensu. In the second chapter, we accomplished a report of the masters degree in education with the objective of detaching his/her expansion, during the decade of 70, even middles of the decade of 80. In that expansion process, the scientific research was a decisive factor of the activities of the master's degree programs and doctorate. Soon afterwards, we will consider the history of the masters degree programs in education of the universities, PUC-Rio, UFRJ and UERJ. Finally, in the third chapter, we went back our attention to the form as the evaluation of the Brazilian masters degree was organized for the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes). In that sense, we related that new one systematic with documents elaborated for they be used in the last evaluation trienal of the you Castrate, regarding the period from 2007 to 2009, in this case referred to the following documents: I regulate for the evaluation trienal 2010 (2007-2009) and Document of the Area of Education 2009, associating, in a general way, the guidelines of those documents with the data of the Notebook of Indicators of the masters degree programs in education of PUC-Rio, of UFRJ and of UERJ.
