However, when we academically address some issue related to deafness and sign language, the reaction continues to be one of astonishment and novelty. It's common to hear "wow, I'd never thought of that! ". This astonishment points to the problem that deaf people face on a daily basis: they have no place in the mostly hearing society in which they are placed. We tried to point out how the philosophy of language gives us tools to think about the social exclusion that deaf people face on a daily basis, and how this impacts on the constitution of their subjectivity, bearing in mind the notion that recognition of self and other takes place through language and by language, which is shared in community life. We have seen that, despite many struggles, the deaf community continues to resist and find ways to constitute themselves as subjects beyond the (im)possibilities that the majority hearing society provides. The deaf subject, burdened with hearing discourses, finds his own voice and establishes a new order of discourse.
