Social networks, such as Twitter and Instagram, are participatory sensing systems where communities generate a large amount of data every day. Existing studies have often focused on collecting and transforming social media data into insights that may help citizens, with little concern whether the dataset represents the phenomenon they want to understand. This work explores the adequacy of social networking services to be used as platforms for smart city applications. Here, a methodology composed of three steps is proposed. First, the focus is on how to select a social network service that is best suited for a certain application. Second, there is a concern about the validity and quality of the data provided from the Twitter platform in terms of message recovery completeness and response time. Finally, a comparative study is produced over the characteristics of Instagram and Twitter about the level of completeness and response time that these platforms respond to their users. Performance analysis results reveal that in spite of well-known data delivery constraints of the Twitter Streaming API, the majority of tweets could be successfully captured with a response time that makes it adequate to real-time processing.
