Resumo: Measurements of natural tritium in surface and groundwater and of carbon-14 in wells are used in order to study the functioning of the aquifers in the Cariri area in the south of Ceará State at the border with Pernambuco State. A laboratory for eletrolytic enrichment of natural tritium has been installed. Measurements were in agreement witch those obtained by Gessellschaft für Strahlen-und Umweltforschung mbH München - GSF / Germany and International Atomic Energy Agency - IAEA / Vienna. Interpretation of the data was made using mathematical models which permit the determination of parameters that describe the dynamics of the aquifers Missão Velha and Feira Nova. For the latter the transit time was determined, the thickness of the satured layer at the Feira Nova/Santana contact and rate of infiltration were estimated. In addition to these data natural carbon-14 measurements were made in the lower Missão Velha and upper Missão Velha which are separated by a leaky clayey layer.

Para tanto implantou-se um laboratório capaz de processar o enriquecimento necessário para medida de trício natural por espectrometria de cintilação líquida de baixa radiação de fundo. Os resultados obtidos foram comparados com medidas realizadas, nestas águas, no Gessellschaft für Strahlen-und Umweltforschung mbH München – GSF/Alemanha e na International Atomic Energy Agency – IAEA/Viena. Os resultados das medidas de concentração de trício foram analisados tendo como base modelos matemáticos para a obtenção de parâmetros que esclarecessem a dinâmica dos aquíferos Missão Velha e Feira Nova. Aliadas a este conjunto de dados, medidas de carbono-14 natural foram realizadas nos aquíferos Missão Velha inferior e superior separados por uma camada de margas que, supõe-se, faz do Missão Velha inferior um aquífero semi-confinado.
