Resumo: In this research was evaluated the efficiency of the adsorbents chitin and chitosan on the phenol adsorption using the wastewater produced by LUBNOR - Lubricants and Petroleum Derivative of Northeast Brazil, an oil refinery of Petrobras, located in Fortaleza, Ceará. The study was divided in two stages: study in batch and column of fixed bed. In the first stage were initially investigated the effect of the mass of adsorbent and the effect pH from phenolic solution. The optims parameters (mass 0,2 g and pH 6) were adopted for the subsequent studies of batch. The adsorption kinetic showed that the equilibrium of adsorption happened in 5 hours for chitin and 6 hours for chitosan. The application of the experimental data to the models of pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticles diffusion, suggest that chitosan and chitin follow adsorption kinetic of first and second order respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained, using the Langmuir model, were 1,96 mg/g for chitin and 1,26 mg/g for chitosan. In the second stage of the research, were studied the variation of hydraulic detention time (HDT), height of the bed and pH of the phenolic solution, to verify the optims conditions of column operation. The maximum phenol removal obtained were 70-80% for both adsorbents. In this study the regeneration of the adsorbents were tested with eluents acetone, acetone 50% v/v, ethanol and ethanol 50% v/v. Of these, ethanol 50% v/v, was more efficiency in the phenol recovery, as well as in the regeneration of the adsorbent. The evaluation of the parameters physical-chemical pH, conductivity, turbidity, oil and greases, COD and dissolved solids, suggest an improvement of quality from wastewater of refinery after the treatment with the adsorventes chitin and chitosan.
