Resumo: Cryptocurrency prices fell sharply after OMS’ declaration about the covid-19 pandemic, in March 2020. Despite recovering value in the course of the pandemic, the fact demonstrated that, like fiat currencies, cryptocurrencies are vulnerable to socioeconomics global dynamics. In addition, the absence of specific regulations renders juridical insecurity to this business. Then, the objective of this work is to analyze cryptocurrencies as a means of payment in Brazil, comparing perspectives raised in 2018 with the cryptoeconomy’s panorama in 2020, discussing it under the logic of the “black swan”. It’s a descriptive research, with a quali-quantitative approach and hypothetical-deductive method, whith data collected from questionnaires, and from the Coinmap.org and CoinMarketCap.com. It was found that cryptocurrencies haven’t yet consolidated as a means of exchange in Brazil because their low liquidity, large value fluctuations, and absence of regulations, generate uncertainty about their functions as currency. So, are beening treated like investment, and functioning as crypto-assets.

Apesar de recuperarem valor no curso da pandemia, o fato demonstrou que, assim como as moedas fiduciárias, as criptomoedas são vulneráveis às dinâmicas socioeconômicas globais. Além disso, a ausência de regulamentação específica impregna tais negócios de insegurança jurídica. Diante de tal problemática, objetivou-se nesse trabalho analisar as criptomoedas como meio de pagamento no Brasil, comparando perspectivas levantadas em 2018 com o panorama da criptoeconomia durante a pandemia em 2020, discutindoo sob a lógica do Cisne Negro. Trata-se de pesquisa descritiva, com abordagem quali-quantitativa e método hipotético-dedutivo, cujos dados foram coletados a partir da aplicação de questionários, e dos sítios Coinmap.org e CoinMarketCap.com. Verificou-se que as criptomoedas ainda não se consolidaram como meio de troca no Brasil, porque a sua pouca liquidez, associada às grandes oscilações de valor e à escassez regulatória, geram incerteza sobre as suas funções como moeda.
