Resumo: With the advancement of technologies, dentistry has been seeking updates in the most diverse specialties in order to adapt to the technological development scenario, such as the use of electronic dental records. With several advantages when compared to paper, such as process agility and sustainability, this type of system gained greater prominence after the COVID19 pandemic, since 2009 being recognized by the Federal Council of Dentistry as a viable alternative for dental care, both in the clinical setting as educational. It is also possible to use this type of software for education in dentistry, promoting greater interaction between professors, students and patients, in addition to enabling the systematization of processes linked to each discipline. Thus, the objective of this study was to improve and evaluate an electronic registration system in the Dentistry Course of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) campus Sobral, in addition to evaluating expectations regarding its use, as well as post-implementation usability. To this end, a cross-sectional study was proposed where student validation was carried out by providing data from a fictitious case and the subsequent completion of the electronic medical record. Paradoxical concepts about the use of the software, its usability (SUS scale) and a SWOT analysis were performed. The paradoxes that defined technology as facilitating the order and control of tasks (Paradox 1 – Control/Chaos) and also as a benefit for work processes (Paradox 3 – New/Obsolete) were considered satisfied. It was evident in the results that there is a need for structural improvement and availability of high-speed internet service in order to allow the proper use of the system, which is still considered an important factor in the evaluation of students. The electronic medical record developed was considered by the students as Good (mean 68.8±14.9), not having shown statistical differences regarding the number of correct answers in filling out the fictitious clinical case made available when comparing students from different graduation periods. Key points in the SWOT analysis were cited in relation to data security, process agility, need for training prior to using the system, in addition to other difficulties encountered. Thus, it became evident that improvements will be necessary to build a future use of this software in UFC Dentistry courses, which still presents several advantages over the conventional paper one.
