Resumo: This master's research examines the adaptation of the narrative poem The Divine Comedy (1304 - 1321), with emphasis on the first canticle, Inferno, by Dante Alighieri, to the electronic game Dante’s Inferno (2010), developed by Visceral Games. The study investigates how Dante uses combinations of words to create complex and detailed imagery of a realm of torment, and how this translation— known as the transmutation of one system of signs into another—is carried out. The idea of "transmutation" of systems of signs is discussed based on the Theory of Adaptation, primarily through the ideas of Robert Stam. For the author, adapting a work is not simply translating it from one medium to another — like turning a book into a movie or a game. It is a more creative process, where the work gains new layers of meaning as it migrates from one format to another. In the case of Dante’s Inferno, the transition from the literary poem to the world of video games was not just a direct transfer of the story. The game recreates the work within a new context, blending elements of pop culture, interactive technology, and the visual language of video games. In other words, it is not a faithful copy, but a reinterpretation that dialogues with its time and its medium. The main objective is to understand how this transmutation modifies, dialogues with, and adapts to the narratives, goals, languages, audiences, and circulation mediums of each sign system. O estudo investiga como Dante utiliza combinações de palavras para formar imagens complexas e detalhadas de um lugar de tormentos, e como essa tradução, conhecida como transmutação de um sistema de signos para outro, é realizada para o jogo. A ideia de "transmutação” de sistemas de signos" é discutida com base na Teoria da Adaptação, principalmente nas ideias de Robert Stam. Para o autor, adaptar uma obra não é simplesmente traduzi-la de uma mídia para outra — como transformar um livro em filme ou jogo. É um processo mais criativo, em que a obra ganha novas camadas de significado ao migrar de um formato para outro. No caso de Dante’s Inferno, a passagem do poema literário para o universo dos games não foi só uma transferência direta da história. O jogo recria a obra dentro de um novo contexto, misturando elementos da cultura pop, da tecnologia interativa e da linguagem visual dos games. Ou seja, não é uma cópia fiel, mas uma reinterpretação que dialoga com seu tempo e sua mídia. O objetivo principal é compreender como essa transmutação modifica, dialoga e se adapta às narrativas, objetivos, linguagens, públicos e meios de circulação relacionados ao produto meta. A pesquisa questiona de que maneira as complexidades do jogo potencializam, reinterpretam ou subvertem a narrativa literária para criar uma narrativa própria, e como isso afeta a trajetória do protagonista. A análise é baseada em teóricos como Linda Hutcheon (2013), Robert Stam (2006), Joseph Campbell (2007) e Itamar Even-Zohar (1990), cujas perspectivas esclarecem o processo de adaptação e as interações entre diferentes sistemas de comunicação. Ao integrar essas abordagens teóricas, essa análise pretende contribuir para uma compreensão mais profunda das complexidades envolvidas na adaptação intermidiática e seus impactos nas narrativas literárias e de jogos eletrônicos. A investigação busca entender as dinâmicas entre a literatura clássica e as novas formas de mídia, explorando como o processo de adaptação pode ampliar o alcance e a acessibilidade de obras literárias, ao mesmo tempo em que desafia suas interpretações e significados primários.
