A expressão da obrigação nas construções ter que + infinitivo, deve + infinitivo e precisar + infinitivo: uma análise variacionista

This work has as their primary objective investigate the variation between theperiphrasticconstructions of obligationmodals ter que+ infinitive, dever+ infinitive and precisar+ infinitive. These constructions refer, mostly, to deontic modality, but they can present traits related to the spistemic modality.Based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of Variacionist Sociolinguistic (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 2006 [1968]; LABOV, 2008 [1972]), analyzing the dates of 46 interviews that constitute the Project Portuguese spoken on Vitória city (PortVix), considering the following linguisticfactors (or internal): focus of obligation, type of obligation, tense, discursiveparallelism and epistemic constructions. In addition, we observed the performance ofsocial aspects (or external)enunciator, age group, education level and sex. Thestatistic control of those factor groups took place through computer programsGoldVarb X (SANKOFF; TAGLIAMONTE; SMITH, 2005), for binary rounds, andTverb, to ternary analyzes (PINTZUK, 1988/1992), both components of the Varbrulpackage. In addition to scanning the variation process itself, we search describe therelation between the constrution of obligation and the deontic and epistemicmodalities. We found a total of 1180 cases of ter que+ infinitive (83%), 168 of dever+ infinitive (12%) and 74 precisar+ infinitive (5%). Our results reveal that thealternance between those constructions is significantly influenced by linguisticfactors while social aspects are not very relevant. In analyzing all the data, of the Five linguistic variables investigated, there was a selection of four of them, in this order:verbal tense, epistemic constructions, discursive parallelism and type of obligation.We conclude that, in general, the dever+ infinitive reveals traits of [-assertiveness],[+subjectivity] and [-objectivity], while have to + infinitive shows characteristics of[+assertiveness], [-subjectivity] and [+objectivity]
