In 1580, in the same year that Philip II of Spain has become king of Portugal, was founded turned to the Atlantic Ocean the city of Buenos Aires. It wasn t long before Portuguese traders, with links with Brazil, increased their interests to the south of the continent and its upcountry. Entrepôt of African slaves and outgoing of Potosi s silver, Buenos Aires has become over the first half of the Seventeenth Century an area of experiences between Lusitanian and Spaniards. The relations of complicity between residents, merchants, governors and royal officers allowed a social dynamic in the city and the possibility of the Portuguese and their descendants acquire lands near the Rio de la Plata, participate in assaults against Indians, or occupy positions in the City Hall or other strategic functions. Wrapped in city s interests and the networks overseas trade with Brazil, Portugal, Spain and Angola, Lusitanian and Spaniards were part of the power networks constituents of an area hitherto ambiguous in the Spanish Empire. By studying these social networks that were established between a private management and other public , perceives the existence of an economy of knowledge wich made possible the colonization of the Rio de la Plata, as well as the practice of extralegalidade and autotransformação of elites in Buenos Aires. The aim of this study is to analyze the construction of the informal personal relations structures composed by Portuguese in the 17th Century Buenos Aires, as well as the increase of their networks and linkages in Portuguese America.
