This dissertation analyzes the indigenous protagonism of the indigenous peoples of the Kariri nation, located in the south of the captaincy of Ceará, during the 18th century, a period in which the main clashes involving this indigenous nation intensified. To do this, we used research methodologies that cover approaches in global history and connected perspective, considering that this indigenous nation occupied and traveled through various territories in Portuguese America throughout the colonial period. The analysis is based on sources available in the Overseas Historical Archive (AHU) and other documentation that discusses, mentions and involves the Kariri. In addition to this, the main bibliographical productions that seek to highlight the indigenous protagonism in history and understand the complex contexto of indigenous resistance were used. It is essential to approach this resistance not Only from the perspective of direct conflicts with the colonial system, but also through escapes, building alliances and seeking protection in religious settlements, among other attitudes and behaviors that may have been silenced by colonial power. The documentation consulted, combined with the new methodologies of history, seeks to recover the indigenous protagonist in the historical narrative. The use of these methodologies in this research has the potential to help recover and construct narratives that highlight the significant role of the various indigenous peoples in the general context of the colonization of Portuguese America. In doing so, it combats the Eurocentric productions that have perpetuated stereotypes over the centuries in different parts of the world, enabling new reflections and the inclusion of groups, places and regions that participated in historical processes that are often undervalued in traditional analyses.
