Departamento de Letras, Instituto de Ciências Humanas e Sociais, Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto.Esta dissertação investiga a Epístola 1.19 de Horácio, tomando-a como um texto de caráter programático no qual o poeta elabora princípios fundamentais de sua poética. A partir da célebre expressão imitatores, servum pecus, analisamos de que modo Horácio constrói uma distinção entre imitação servil e emulação (aemulatio), situando-se criticamente em relação à tradição literária grega e ao contexto da produção poética romana do século I a.e.c. Para tanto, discutimos aspectos da cultura letrada helenística, especialmente a poética de Calímaco de Cirene, bem como a recepção de modelos gregos na literatura latina augustana. A análise da epístola é desenvolvida a partir de sua organização interna em três seções, observando-se as estratégias retóricas e intertextuais mobilizadas por Horácio para afirmar sua autoridade poética. Sustenta-se que a Epístola 1.19 não constitui apenas uma defesa circunstancial contra críticos e imitadores, mas uma reflexão sistemática acerca do fazer poético, da tradição e da construção de uma voz autoral própria. Ao final, apresentam-se duas traduções integrais da epístola, uma em verso metrificado e outra de caráter acadêmico-comentado, com o objetivo de contribuir para os estudos de tradução e recepção da obra horaciana em língua portuguesa.This dissertation investigates Epistle 1.19 by Horace, approaching it as a programmatic text in which the poet elaborates fundamental principles of his poetics. Based on the celebrated expression imitatores, servum pecus, this study analyzes how Horace constructs a distinction between servile imitation and emulation (aemulatio), positioning himself critically in relation to the Greek literary tradition and to the context of Roman poetic production in the first century BCE. To this end, aspects of Hellenistic literary culture are discussed, especially the poetics of Callimachus of Cyrene, as well as the reception of Greek models in Augustan Latin literature. The analysis of the Epistle is developed according to its internal organization into three sections, focusing on the rhetorical and intertextual strategies employed by Horace to affirm his poetic authority. It is argued that Epistle 1.19 is not merely a circumstantial defense against critics and imitators, but rather a systematic reflection on poetic creation, tradition, and the construction of an authorial voice.
