Resumo: This study aimed at analyzing the social representations of health and illness according to the Spiritist Doctrine contained in the "The Book of Spirits." It also objectified to analyze the conception of man in this doctrine, the view of human existence and the social issues. To achieve the objectives, a study was carried out. This research counted on an investigation by means of instruments that focus on the analysis of literary production that recorded the vision of man, the world and life based on the spiritual doctrine. The software Analyse des Lexèmes Co-occurents dans les Énnoncés Simples d un Texte - ALCESTE was used to analyze the verbal information. The data was extracted from a digitalized book and the necessary procedures for submitting it to the software was also done. The Social representations of health and illness emerged from the book of Spiritism were objectified by the concepts of "atonement and "probations ". It is the genesis of man that the doctrine seeks to anchor the illness. The body is a common enclosed of the spirit and disease is seen as the way to perfection, the way that materializes justice of creation - divine justice. The passage of man through the earth offers possibilities to the expiation of the mistakes that caused the person to moves away from the purpose of evolution, and the probations are faced to secure the learning process and follow the man to go on. The disease as expiations or atonement for spiritualists aimed at offering the man the improvements in which he is proposed. The disease is no longer threatening and becomes allied to the human progress. This evidence classifies this case as Anchoring of psychological type because it relates the general beliefs or values that organize the symbolic relations. Health is anchored in obeying the natural or divine laws and objectified in an equilibrium and harmony that lead to a healthy life towards perfection. Based on these findings the book of the Spiritual Doctrine seems to be in accordance to the Communication System indicated by Moscovici of propagation type because it incorporates new information on the group‟s values systems. Consequently there are many reasons why physicians should discuss religious or spiritual issues with their patients, learning to identify spiritual needs and pass patients on to health professionals qualified to deal with these needs. It is expected these findings may generate more knowledge, expand the dialogue between the various other fields of science, apart from social psychology, as well as promote reflections concerning the need of physicians‟ qualification to integrate spirituality in the patients.
