The doctoral dissertation was carried out based on investigations in the Quilombola Community of Povoação de São Lourenço, in the municipality of Goiana, Pernambuco, Brazil. The reflections presented here focus on Afro-Indigenous historical and religious perceptions that emerged in this territory in an unplanned manner, intertwining cultures. The main objective is to investigate the ethnic-cultural practices and experiences surrounding historical and divine figures, that is, the Malunguinhos who became deified.The specific objectives of the dissertation are: to identify and describe, based on bibliographic references, the deified Malunguinhos in Afro-Indigenous cults, both historically and in the present; to identify and present decolonial directions for the field of Religious Studies; to demonstrate the importance of national visibility for Malunguinho through the carnival parade presented by Viradouro at the Sapucaí; to analyze and describe the process of Quilombola (re)cognition and the Afro-Indigenous legacy in the community; to identify, analyze, and describe how people experience, practice, and value Afro-Indigenous beliefs; to discuss and analyze the practices and rituals of the Carrego da Lenha on August 10, and the Offering to the Reis Malunguinhos in the forest on November 20 of each year.Regarding the theoretical-methodological aspect, the dissertation employs an ethnographic perspective, understanding ethnography as both method and theory, in line with Michael Angrosino (2009) and Mariza Peirano (2014). Among the eight subfields of Religious Studies and Theology, the research is situated within the scope of the Empirical Sciences of Religion, in dialogue with the Anthropology of Religions. The dissertation highlights the actions of the Malunguinhos, their decolonial reconfigurations, and to support the interpretations, it draws on the work of Peter Burke (2003; 2008) and Néstor García Canclini (2019), who discuss mixtures, syncretisms, hybridizations, accommodations, and negotiations. These concepts, along with Homi Bhabha’s (2013) notion of the in-between space, help to understand the cultural expressions of Povoação as the result of subaltern significations. Therefore, the dissertation ultimately aims to demonstrate that Malunguidade is a set of community practices and experiences connected to the Malunguinhos, transcending the religious sphere, as they also encompass the political force of Malunguinho, considering the historical Malungos.
