State of the art: Endophthalmitis is an intraocular infection with a poor prognosis in most cases, as the patient's final visual acuity may remain equal or worse than before surgical treatment. In some situations, there is a need for more radical treatments, such as enucleation or evisceration, which consist, respectively, of the removal of the eyeball or its internal content. Despite the low incidence of this type of infection, the outlook in case of outbreaks is devastating. In this context, Epidemiological Surveillance emerges as an important tool for the elaboration of infections prevention, monitoring and control procedures. Objective: To develop an Epidemiological Surveillance System through the elaboration of a software or application to monitor, investigate, control, and prevent endophthalmitis in the ophthalmology services of the Empresa Brasileira de Serviços Hospitalares hospital network. Materials and methods: This is a methodological study with technological, descriptive divided into three stages: Stage I: Literature review. Stage II: Application of a semi-structured questionnaire to members of care teams in the sector responsible for ophthalmologic surgeries to survey the diagnosis of the system used in the prevention of endophthalmitis. Stage III: Development of a specific Epidemiological Surveillance System for endophthalmitis. Results and discussion: Development of software for endophthalmitis. The system should carry out in a practical way analysis of: endophthalmitis distribution and frequency; profile of hospital’s involved microorganisms, including community germ infections considered as contaminants. It should also identify a hospital’s endophthalmitis index (hospital infection) by procedure and for a specific period. For this notification system elaboration, a specific protocol was also added for the prevention and intervention in endophthalmitis cases in the Institution. A best practice for ophthalmic surgical procedures handbook was also written. The study also subsidized the preparation of two scientific articles that will be offered to the scientific community.
