Resumo: The essence of this research is to reflect on writing as an oniric element and a transformative tool, while also examining the strategies employed by Buchi Emecheta for the critical reproduction of reflexivity and mirroring in her work "Second Class Citizen" (2018). In this narrative, Adah Obi— a fictional character that closely mirrors the author herself— navigates between Nigeria and England in search of social mobility and the attainment of rights in a post-colonial context. Her journey is propelled by the aspiration for imperialist progress prevalent in Eastern regions. In this light, the protagonist confronts the manifold violences inherent in the migration experience, intensified by the anti-migrant policies in effect in the United Kingdom during the 1960s. Through her writing, Adah manifests a personified Presence that reconnects her with her ancestral and identity ties, enabling critical processes that challenge entrenched social markers related to race, gender, migration, and class. Motivated by a desire to become a writer, Adah asserts her ability to resist the system of male domination and strive for her own emancipation. In conclusion, the discussions herein are framed within a post-colonial theoretical and methodological framework, drawing on the works of thinkers such as Oyèrónkẹ Oyěwùmí (2021), Opoku (2010), Edward Said (2011), Thomas Bonnici (2012), Stuart Hall (2005), Bibi Bakare-Yusuf (2003), Doubrovsky (1977), and Eurídice Figueiredo (2013), among others, while engaging in a dialogue with diverse fields of knowledge, including Social Sciences and Political Sociology.
