Resumo: ABSTRACT Since the formation of villages in the province of Alagoas, indigenous peoples have interacted with military issues, such as the defense and protection of the territory conquered by the Portuguese crown. These people were essential for victory in several conflicts and revolts that occurred during the colonization process, lasting until the 19th century. However, after the promulgation of the Directory of Indians, indigenous peoples were subject to the guardianship regime, at the same time as they were elevated to the legal status of vassals and subjects of the king. Under the Constitution of 1824, they were not treated by name, remaining wards of the State. In 1831, the National Guard was created, a military corporation formed to contain the unrest that spread throughout the Empire, in addition to carrying out investigations in the localities. As an entry criterion, guards had to be citizens. Therefore, the inclusion of indigenous people in this corporation makes us understand the military participation of these people and their contributions throughout the process of formation of the Brazilian National State. For the research, the sources used are handwritten documentation produced in the period, such as correspondence sent between authorities, letters, newspapers and topographical maps from various Brazilian archives.
