To improve water supply and sewage treatment, the federal government aims to increase and guarantee, by 2033, through the legal framework for basic sanitation, that the Brazilian population can benefit from the provision of efficient services in the sector. Currently, investments are intended so that responsible companies can modernize and expand the provision of services at the state, municipal and regional levels. Although there is an effort by the state of Sergipe to improve performance in basic sanitation services, there is great negligence on the part of Sergipe's municipalities in providing data that proves the performance of services provided to the population. Thus, this study proposes to verify the efficiency of water supply and sewage services in municipalities in Sergipe from 2016 to 2021. To this end, public data from the National Sanitation Information System (SNIS) and the non-parametric technique of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), considering the expenses of operating services with water and sewage as input, and the variables of total population served with water supply and sewage and number of active water and sewage connections, such as products. The results showed that the majority of Sergipe's municipalities have inefficient performance in the provision of water supply and sewage services and that the new rules established by the sanitation regulatory framework contributed to the participation of Sergipe's municipalities in the SNIS data collection, in the last two years of this research. However, municipalities in Sergipe are moving slowly towards the universalization of basic sanitation.
