Sob a perspectiva teórico-metodológica da Sociolinguística variacionista, a pesquisa objetivou depreender a relação, em tese conflitante, entre o uso do gênero gramatical feminino e a identificação social com o gênero masculino, bem como os contextos linguísticos e extralinguísticos relevantes à realização do fenômeno variável em análise. Foram realizados entrevistas e testes de atitude com doze informantes, declaradamente gays, com idades entre 18 e 49 anos, residentes nos estados de Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul. Os resultados apontaram à relevância de três variáveis independentes externas atuando sobre o fenômeno: (i) a idade dos sujeitos, sendo a variação de gênero gramatical característica apenas dos indivíduos mais jovens; (ii) o grau de formalidade da situação interativa, ficando a variável linguística restrita a situações de informalidade; e (iii) o grau de proximidade entre interlocutores, ocorrendo a variação de gênero gramatical somente na interação entre indivíduos muito próximos. Não satisfeitos todos esses requisitos, a predicação desses indivíduos se dá sempre de acordo com o cânone, isto é, com uso da forma variante masculina, que compõe a linguagem vernacular do grupo. Ainda, conforme os dados analisados, o uso do gênero gramatical feminino em predicação representa, aliado ao uso de outros signos sociais e linguísticos, a projeção daquela que denominamos persona gay dos indivíduos, ou seja, uma das diferentes personalidades que compõem a sua identidade.Abstract : This thesis deals with the variable realization of the grammatical gender in predicative structures produced by Brazilian gay men, namely on the variation of masculine and feminine genders in constructions such as estou cansado (I am tired with masculine) vs. estou cansada (I am tired with feminine). From the theoretical and methodological point of view of the Theory of language change (W.L.H., 1968), the research aimed to understand the relationship, in theory conflicting, between the use of the feminine grammatical gender and the social identification with the masculine gender, as well as the linguistic and extralinguistic contexts relevant to the realization of the variable phenomenon under analysis. Interviews and attitude tests were carried out with twelve gay informants aged 18-49 in the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The results pointed to the relevance of three external independent variables acting on the phenomenon: (i) the subjects' ages, the grammatical gender variation being characteristic only of the younger individuals; (ii) the degree of formality of the interactive situation, the linguistic variable being restricted to situations of informality; and (iii) the degree of proximity between interlocutors, with grammatical gender variation occurring only in the interaction between very close individuals. If all these requirements are not met, the predication of these individuals is always in accordance with the canon, that is, with the use of the masculine variant form, which composes the vernacular language of the group.
