This research is part of the concentration area “History and Cultural Heritage” and the research line “Archival Documentary Heritage” of the Postgraduate Program in Cultural Heritage at the Federal University of Santa Maria. It is a study that aims to consolidate a preservation and emergency plan for the archival documentary heritage of the Registry of Properties of the County of Rio Grande, an institution that is responsible for transcribing real estate acquisitions and registering possible incumbencies on real estate properties. It also intends to present preservation guidelines to promote knowledge on the procedures used for mitigating risks to the collection, which are of public interest and keep the memory of the real estate records of the municipality. For this, with the methodology used, the objective is to generate knowledge aimed at practice, with the intention of providing a solution to possible specific difficulties, from the perspective of addressing the problem. The research is qualitative and exploratory. This type of study involves a bibliographic survey and application of interviews. In addition, it is classified as a case study, with the application of a research instrument. Thus, the first activity developed was the diagnosis, based on the questionnaire applied in the institution, which served to point out the main failures that could devastate the documents in the event of a catastrophe. This study presents an emergency plan as an educational product, containing recommendations for the storage and preventive maintenance of documents. This instrument will point out instructions for the maintenance of the building, a priority plan for the elimination of risks, as well as a rescue plan.
