Resumo: The aim of the present work is to evaluate the stocking density and the transition time among the used diets in feed training process of trairão Hoplias lacerdae fingerlings. We made an experiment with full factorial delineation which had five stocking densities (4, 6, 7, 8 and 10 fish/L) and four transition time among diets (2, 3, 4 and 5 days). Trairão fingerlings with standard length of 3,3 cm ± 0,3 cm and mean weigth of 0,5 g ± 0,05 g were distributed in aquariums (35 cm X 30 cm X 14 cm) with six liters of water and constant aeration. At the end of each transition time among diets, realized measures of length and weigh to evaluate the daily mean gain of weight and length, and of the heterogeneity of the final length. To evaluate the feed behavior of trairão fingerlings was observed the time to feed the meal, peletes intake position and competition among fish by peletes intake. This study demonstrated that trairão fingerlings can be easily trained to accept formulated diets independent on the stocking density and transition time. There were significative effects to the daily gain of mean weight and final length heterogeneity. The daily gain of weight noticed that the best results in transition times happened in two, three, and four days, and in the transition time of five days the increase of stocking density influenced negative the daily gain of weight of the fishes. We noticed significative effects in ingestion time, position, and competition among the fish by food. In first meal time (8h00min) there was more ingestion by fishes. In transition time among the diets of two and five days happened competition by peletes on superficies. In transition time three and four days observed that the increase in stocking density provided decrease in competition among fish on superficies by food. The capture of peletes on the water column and on the bottom of the aquarium (with and without competition) demonstrated that in all the transition times among diets there was an increase in peletes capture with competition. The results of this experiment show that trairão fingerlings learn to eat formulated diets independent of stocking density and the transition time of diets. The interaction between the stocking density and the transition time among diets influence in competition by food by fish.
