This study focused on the juridical analysis of the dimension and use of Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs).The aim was to make a juridical evaluation on the utilization of the PPA resources. Thus, a bibliographic and a documental research project were carried out, the first comprising the analysis of books, dissertations, dictionaries, magazines and Internet searches and the second involving the analysis of laws, decrees, resolutions, and provisory measures. The results showed that although environmental law prohibits PPA suppression, under exceptional hypotheses of public utility and social interest, this type of intervention is allowed, and that the term suppression means extinction, abolition and annulment of the forests located inside the PPAs; that Conama Resolution 369 is against the principles and juridical laws which state that the PPAs are ruled by the principle of untouchability; that preservation means sustainable and rational use of the environmental resources rather than their integral protection; and that environmental law does not prohibit the use and management of the PPAs. It was concluded that the treatment based on the untouchability of the PPAs has been misused by various sectors of our society, especially those environmentally- oriented and thus, only the Public Power through the issuing of duly elaborated laws, could regulate PPA-related issues.
