This research has for objective show the procedures in which Murilo Mendes confirmed and fortified in his aesthetic project a meaning typically modern. The indications of this composition were shown in the field of the multiple territorialities through the persistent work that the author undertook to take directions in a double movement, to decipher the Other and re-establish himself. Modernity and Otherness, considered in their unfoldings, are showed in the present research through a study of four works: Siciliana (1954-1955), Tempo Espanhol (1955-1958), Espaço Espanhol (1966-1969) and Janelas Verdes (1970). Murilo Mendes constructs his aesthetic way of expressing himself between the philosophical attitude and the formal research. In this direction, it is supposed to search an insertion to the artistic modernity from the categories of Time, Space, Memory and Otherness; it is also supposed to put into categories the Daily and Nightly Regimes of the circumscribed Images in the related works. The analysis creation it´s going to be based on Theory of the Substance´s Imagination, written by Gaston Bachelard, and the Imaginary Theory, by Gilbert Durand. This investigation takes place in four chapters: in the first one it´s showed the Net of Otherness in Siciliana and Janelas Verdes, both works that express an interesting character, because they present some spaces offered to Murilo Mendes´s reading from Juiz de Fora and Rio de Janeiro through Italy, Spain, Portugal, among others; in the second chapter it´s going to be analyzed the categories that connect Murilo Mendes to the aesthetic articulation that dialogues with the tradition, with the new, with the local and the universal, from Baudelaire, Rimbaud and Mallarmé, passing through the artistic vanguards, by the meaning of the game in the modern poetical writing, by the archetype secular and the statute of the mimesis; the third chapter brings the interest by the Spanish scenery, with the analysis of the works Tempo Espanhol and Espaço Espanhol in which Murilo Mendes uses the formal experimentation, it´s going to be showed the places, spaces of cultural confluence that starts to receive the theoretical subsidy referred to support symbolic evidences of the related poems; In the fourth and last chapter it is retaken the book Imaginary Theory of Gilbert Durand and Theory of the Substance`s Imagination of Gaston Bachelard, among others theoreticians, to extend the defense of the lines of force of the Daily and Nightly Regimes of the images in the set of the work and to add, from this argument, the hypothesis that recognizes the modern filiation of Murilo Mendes; and also to show the images of the substance that are recurrent in poems.
