Resumo: Este estudo oferece uma discussão crítica do processo de adaptação da obra Great Expectations (1861), de Charles Dickens, para os quadrinhos, em três publicações distintas, todas em língua inglesa, Great Expectations, publicada pela editora Gilberton Company, em 1947, na coleção “Classics Illustrated” (n° 43), Great Expectations, lançada pela First/Berkley Publishing, em fevereiro de 1990, integrante da coleção homônima “Classics Illustrated” (n° 2), e Great Expectations, publicada em 2009 pela Classical Comics. A partir da análise dos três volumes são elencadas as principais estratégias para a condensação do texto do romance, seguidas de comentários sobre a relação do texto com as imagens, em cada um, e sua importância para a construção significativa. Ao final, propõe-se uma reflexão a respeito das definições “quadrinhos” e “graphic novel”. Obras sobre Dickens, o romance e as adaptações em enfoque, além dos Estudos da Adaptação e os Estudos da Imagem, constituem os principais aportes teóricos de fundamentação da pesquisa.

Departing from the analysis of the three volumes, we listed the main strategies for the condensation of the text and commented on the association of text and images in each of them, also focusing on its importance for the construction of meaning. As a means of conclusion, we reflect on the definitions “comics” and “graphic novel”.
