Soccer is a serious thing and is constituted in and out of the pitch! Present in Brazilian life, either as entertainment or as an alienating tool, the British sport is directly connected to the whole society and the population's sense of nationalism. Based on this assumption, we started the process of selecting 10 columns by Josué Guimarães, a Brazilian writer from the State of Rio Grande do Sul, published in newspapers of Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul in the 1950s and 1970s in order to assess how he used soccer as a basis for comparisons, reflections and social criticism in his time. Along the way, we present football and its different visions, address journalistic practices and the peculiarities of the sportswriter's work, reflect on what is or is not literary, enter the universe of genres and scrutinize the chronicle, genre chosen by this southern Brazilian writer for uniting literature and journalism in order to expose his thoughts, ideas and positions on his contemporary reality. We contextualize the political and social events that marked the times of production of journalistic chronicles to then dive into the world of soccer, politics and society, identifying and analyzing how Josué Guimarães aproximated and joined these issues in his productions. With the ball rolling, we achieved the goal of identifying ironies, double meanings and textual articulations that are only possible to those who have mastered the art of allocating in the same place reality and fiction, goal and vote, midfielder and president
