Resumo: The birth of a child with a disability has implications and changes in the environment and family dynamics as a whole. The family goes through a process of overcoming until the acceptance of the disabled child and the establishment of a conducive family environment that includes them and meets their needs. Studies on siblings of children with disabilities conclude that , in this context, siblings usually assume the role of caregiver, regardless of age or birth order. Trisomy 21 (T21) is the most frequent genetic anomalyamong those diagnosed. People with T21 have intellectual disability as a main characteristic, in addition to a global delay in development. Authors claim that siblings of children with disabilities are a group more susceptible to psychological problems. This study aimed to characterize parenting styles, self-concept and behavioral and emotional aspects of siblings aged 11 to 16 years of age of children and adolescents with T21, in order to know the impact of disability for participants in the family context and social . It was a cross-sectional and descriptive study, with inferential and qualitative statistical analysis . The sample consisted of 35 participants, 18 adolescents aged 11 and 16 years old, brothers of people with T21 and 17 responsible for such adolescents. The instruments used were: ABEP Socioeconomic Level Questionnaire (2018), Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL / 6-18), Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (QEDP), Infant-Juvenile Self-Concept Scale (EAC-IJ) and semistructured interview . Phase 1 consisted of sending the disclosure link with the questionnaire to identify the participant in existing groups in Social Networks, which aimed to gather family members and those interested in the theme of T21. Those who responded were sent the second link about the child without T21 and the QEDP. After completing the completion of the first questionnaires, the participant was provided with a link to proceed with the CBCL / 6-18 data. All guardians who composed the final sample authorized the child without T21 to participate in the second phase of the study. Phase 2 consisted of the application of the EAC-IJ and the semi-structured interview. All interviews were conducted remotely, via video call via WhatsApp, meeting the recommendations for safety and social distance resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic that occurred in the year 2020. The interviews were recorded and transcribed and had an average duration of 10 to 15 minutes. The instruments were analyzed based on the scores obtained . F pray applied statistical tests to analyze the frequency and distribution of categorical data and possible associations between self - concept variables, Parenting Styles and behavior problems. The interviews were analyzed qualitatively from the creation of thematic groups and categories. The studied group was evaluated in relation to behavioral problems, selfconcept and parenting styles . The results reinforce the fact that having a brother with a disability is not predictive for the development of emotional or behavioral problems, bringing the importance of family relationships as a safety factor and welcoming the needs of the brothers.
