Desenvolvimento motor, funções executivas e desempenho acadêmico de crianças entre 7 e 9 anos

A situation that raises concern in Basic Education and that has reached most students is the high number of children with learning difficulties. Literature data indicate a possible relationship between the positive impacts of motor development and cognitive development, especially with the Executive Functions - FE. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between motor development, executive functions and academic performance in children aged 7 to 9 years. Seventy-nine children enrolled in the 2nd to 4th grades of Elementary School I, from a private school in the West Zone of the city of São Paulo, their parents, class teachers and physical education teachers participated in this research. The following instruments were used for evaluation: Motor Development - Movement Assessment Battery for Children - Second Edition (MABC-2); Executive Functions - Trail Making Test, Attention Test for Cancellation (TAC) and Children’s Regulation Inventory (IFERA-I), answered by parents and class teachers. In addition to the Motor Behavior Inventory (MBC) that was answered by the PE teacher. The school provided Portuguese and Mathematics grades for assessment of academic performance. Pearson's correlation analysis was performed, with the scores obtained from motor development, executive functions and academic performance, over the different age groups, to search for possible associations. The results presented in this dissertation indicate a positive correlation between motor skills, EF and school grades. The association between the motor development scale (MABC-2) and the Attention Test for Cancellation (TAC) obtained a significant correlation with p < 0,007. In turn, there was also a significant correlation between MABC-2 and Portuguese grade, with p < 0,014. However, further studies should be conducted to conclude the real impacts of motor development on cognitive abilities.
