The way the colonies have been structured, since the actions of the Navy are reflected in the way of life of fishermen and in every organization of the category. The artisanal fishermen of Pernambuco survive in the face of uncertainties that lead to the deconstruction of models of associativism and cooperativism practiced in Brazil. The city of São José da Coroa Grande has a significant importance in the fishing production of the state of Pernambuco and is included in the area of Environmental Protection Area - Coast of the Corals. The present study had as objective to identify the main characteristics of the fishing associativism practiced in the colony Z9 in São José da Coroa Grande, as well as to demonstrate the peculiarities of the fishing practiced. A questionnaire that encompassed questions related to activity, social aspects and associativism was applied to fishermen of the colony. Also interviewed were presidents of the colony (current and previous), questioned in relation to structural aspects of the colony, its importance, social and associative aspects. Finally, we interviewed researchers who work on the theme, questioned in relation to the history of fishing, importance of the activity, associativism, public policies and social capital. The interviews had audio recorded and transcribed. Altogether there were 30 interviews, 25 fishermen (23 fishermen and 2 presidents) and 5 researchers. The participation of fishermen in the activities of the colony depends on factors such as schooling, environmental factors, gender, among others. The colony plays an important role in the intermediation of benefits for the category and this makes the fisherman stay active in the activities that it proposes. Public policies aimed at artisanal fishing were numerous and, in many cases, adequate, problems occurred in the way they were implemented and in the small scope. Since the creation of the Special Secretariat of Aquaculture and Fisheries in 2003 there has been a considerable improvement in this scenario, with important policies and the colonies playing a fundamental role in making these benefits feasible. The social capital exhibited by fishermen has been broken down over time and lost due to external pressures and the situation that fishing faces in terms of income generation. The fishermen of the Colony were little animated in relation to the growth of the activity. The lack of interest for children to follow the same path was perceptible. The fishing activity developed by the fishermen was not different from other places. It is a poorly mechanized activity, but responsible for its livelihood. They have vast knowledge of the activity and situation it faces.
