In Brazil, between the 1970s and 1980s, the manifestations of the feminist and homosexual movements gained greater visibility thanks to the alternative press that presented more progressive agendas. The comic strips of the magazines Rose (1979-1983) and Horoscope of Rose (1979-1980) – published by Grafipar in Curitiba – problematized issues of sexuality of heterosexual women and gay men within the logic of a cultural industry of eroticism. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the representations of femininity and masculinity in comics, considering the themes, graphic language, construction and characterization of the characters, speeches, social and historical contexts. The magazine Rose was aimed at the female audience, addressing, in addition to sexuality issues, themes dear to the feminist movements. Over time, it increasingly favored the male homosexual audience in its content. The magazine Horoscope of Rose has always been aimed at a female audience and, in addition to covering topics related to the zodiac, it also addressed issues of interest to women. A survey was conducted of 73 copies of Rose and 9 copies of Horoscope. The main source of research for these editions was the personal collection of Nelson Padrella (former scriptwriter of the magazines’ comics) and the Prof. Luiz Mott Documentation Center of the Dignidade Group in Curitiba. Due to the large number of comics, it was decided to conduct a more panoramic and general analysis of the stories, discussing only those that presented some peculiarity, both in terms of theme and graphic proposal. During the civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985), the target of censorship was not only political issues, but also what was considered an act against the morals and the traditional values of the conservative society that supported the 1964 coup. This research is based on Stuart Hall’s (1932-2014) concept of culture and representation. One can see in the materiality of the comics attempts to subvert the order and challenge the heteronormative system of that time, redefining hegemonic values and practices, as well as narratives that ended up reiterating some of these practices.
