Translation is an essential tool for the communication between different cultures. However, it needs to be better understood. Some writings are considered translations when, in fact they are not. Languages are built within a historical, social and cultural context, which is intrinsic to the society that uses it. The attempt to translate certain texts is often frustrating because of the difficulty of finding an equivalent word or expression that can acutely express the message from the original text. It happens frequently in literary texts and even more often in poetic texts, in which the author s creativity can freely uses linguistic tools to convey meanings that can t be noticed by just reading the text. The purpose of this study is to analyze the possibility of the translation of poems, using the opinion from theorists and translators concerning literature. For the analysis and experiments in translating poetry, two of William Shakespeare s sonnets are selected, due to the great challenge and pleasure of exploring works from this author, who is an icon for English literature and World literature. Multiple versions for the translation of Sonnet 29 from Shakespeare were presented, in the attempt to demonstrate that due to the amount of obstacles found in translating poetic texts, some of them impassable, its conversion to another language cannot be treated as "translation" but as a "creation" of another text. Two different interpretations of Sonnet 1 are made in order to compare their results, making an analysis of the interpretation of poetic texts.
