Resumo: | This thesis revisits of concepts of reading, interpretation and translation with the objective of investigating the translations of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, into the Brazilian cinema. The three national Hamlets are analyzed: O jogo da vida e da morte (A Game of Life and Death) (1971), by Mario Kuperman, A herança (The Inheritance) (1970), by Ozualdo Candeias, and Hamlet (2014), by Cristiano Burlan. It starts from the hypothesis that the political aspects from the English work are highlighted or softened in the Brazilian translations according to the current political regime in the recipient culture. The first two movies were released three years after the implementation of the Institutional Act nº 5 (AI –5) in 1968, that intensified the military regime. The third movie emerged in the democratic period already threatened by the strengthening of the far right, after the demonstrations of June, 2013, when thousand of Brazilians protested in the streets for several and diffused agendas, for a better country. To prove this hypothesis sociocultural and political factors are considered as central in the several procedures used in the translation of the movies in question. As this thesis focuses on the dialogue between the Shakespearean work, movies and cultures, the corpus analysis will be based on analytical and comparative procedures, which will guide the developed reading. As theoretical background it will be used among other authors, mainly Hadfield (2004), Heliodora (2005) and Ghirardi (2011) to the analysis of political aspects in Shakespeare. About reading, interpretation and readers, the study is based on Bloom (2001), Jouve (2002) and Compagnon (2010). Concerning the concepts of translation, the research follows Diniz (1999), Plaza (2003), Arrojo (2007) and Silva (2013). The study of the Brazilian historical contexts is supported by the reading and the analysis by Skidmore (1999), Fausto (2013), Gohn (2014), Schawarcz and Starling (2018), Pinheiro-Machado (2019) and Napolitano (2020). The analyses have showed that the Brazilian filmic translations of Hamlet express critical positions about power, mainly the political one, in the Brazilian socio-historical contexts, inserting the Prince in scenarios of national crisis. |

The analyses have showed that the Brazilian filmic translations of Hamlet express critical positions about power, mainly the political one, in the Brazilian socio-historical contexts, inserting the Prince in scenarios of national crisis.
