The study investigates Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), with a focus on the DREX Project developed by the Central Bank of Brazil. The research aims to identify and analyze the main challenges and opportunities involved in the adoption of this new form of digital currency, exploring technological and regulatory aspects as well as the perceptions of financial sector professionals. The methodology adopted is qualitative and descriptive, combining documentary analysis with interviews conducted with financial sector professionals. The DREX Project aims to integrate new technologies, such as Smart Contracts and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), to modernize the Brazilian financial system. The research also identified and analyzed the regulatory principles of digital currencies in Brazil and other countries. The perceptions collected from financial sector professionals about DREX reveal that, despite the recognition of the project's transformative potential, there are differing views regarding the related challenges. While many see DREX as an opportunity to improve the efficiency and security of the financial system, significant concerns remain regarding privacy and the inclusion of new users. The pursuit of a balance between security, efficiency, and privacy is highlighted as a crucial aspect for successful implementation.
