Resumo: | Introduction: current research in the field of aging sciences draw attention to the need for studies on the group of elderly people aged 80 years or over, called very elderly or long-lived elderly. Aging results in an increase in the incidence and prevalence of potentially chronic diseases, among which mental disorders stand out. Among mental disorders, depressive disorders have a significant prevalence among the very elderly. In the genesis of depression there is an interaction between stressful events, vulnerabilities, genetic factors, cognitive decline and neurobiological changes related to old age. Objective: the objective of the study was to list the factors associated with depression in 226 long-lived elderly members of the National Academic Cooperation Program (PROCAD). Results: the results showed through the Chi-square test that depression is more prevalent in women (p=0.005) when compared to men. Living alone directly influences the diagnosis of depression (p=0.037) and the polypharmacy and depression variables showed a significant association (p=0.005). Through the Mann-Whitney test, the average number of diseases among individuals diagnosed with depression is higher (p=0) than those without a diagnosis. The elderly with a low score in the mean of the MMSE (p=0,029) present more depressive conditions when compared to the elderly with a higher score. The Chi-square test found a significant association (p=0) in the relationship of being or not diagnosed with depression and whether or not to take antidepressant medications. There was no relationship between depression and the various age groups, nor with the various income strata of the individuals analyzed. Marital status was not related to depression and neither was the factor of having or not a religion. When analyzing the variables smoking and consuming alcohol versus depression, no association was found. Conclusion: Depression is more prevalent in women and in individuals who live alone. Polypharmacy has a significant association with depression, as well as in patients who have several comorbidities. The elderly with a low score on the MMSE average have more depressive conditions when compared to the elderly with a higher score. Antidepressant drugs have an important relationship with depressive symptoms in long-lived elderly people living in the community. |

Submitted by Sara Ribeiro (sara.ribeiro@ucb.br) on 2022-05-09T19:08:34Z No. of bitstreams: 1 CassianoTeixeiradeMoraisDissertacao2021.pdf: 1739034 bytes, checksum: ecf0a888294f6aa89027ae64e9c73b21 (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Sara Ribeiro (sara.ribeiro@ucb.br) on 2022-05-09T19:08:55Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 CassianoTeixeiradeMoraisDissertacao2021.pdf: 1739034 bytes, checksum: ecf0a888294f6aa89027ae64e9c73b21 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2022-05-09T19:08:55Z (GMT).
