Resumo: This study aims at a better understanding of the role of iconographic representations to the resolution of mathematical problems. It is assumed that the act of sketching the pieces information of the problem as well as the steps of the solution facilitates a more complete learning of mathematical concepts. Iconographic representations may help in the selection between relevant and unnecessary information. However, if Expressional Sketching can play a decisive role in the learning, then, its relevance to teaching of Mathematics must be reviewed. The relationship between Expressional Sketching and Mathematics was studied with support of Vygotsky’s socio-historical approach, which made it possible to qualify the Expressional Sketching as an important symbolic mediator to visualization and graphic representation.

Parte-se da premissa de que o ato de rabiscar imagens que expressem tanto o enunciado de um problema quanto as etapas da solução coopera para uma construção mais completa do saber matemático. A representação iconográfica de conceitos, de relações e de propriedades matemáticas pode auxiliar para que informações relevantes não sejam perdidas nem se acrescentem informações desnecessárias ou inexistentes no enunciado. Entretanto, para que o Desenho cumpra seu potencial de suporte cognitivo para o raciocínio matemático, será necessário que sua relevância para a prática pedagógica do professor de matemática seja esclarecida e valorizada. Aqui, o Desenho é entendido como linguagem expressional de emprego útil para a linguagem matemática e compatível com ela. Para situar a relação entre Desenho e Matemática no contexto educacional fundamentou-se na teoria sócio-histórica de Vygotsky.
