The Sociedade Musical Santa Cecília (SMSC) is a bicentenary entity, known for having the oldest music band (Banda Santa Cecília) of Minas Gerais State and for being responsible for the formation of many professional musicians in Sabará. Driven by the impact on the work of this group in the town, this research aims investigating the influence of these musical practices of the band in the formation of musicians from Sabará. It also intends to present information about the musical activities and practice of this group, comprehending the profile and aspects of musical experience of its members, from different perspectives, and suggesting alternative pedagogic approaches that could improve musical results. The research used mixed methods including observation of the musical activities and practice participants of the band, interviews with the maestro and four musicians with diverse musical characteristics, and questionnaires to all members, as well as documental consults and audiovisual records. The concepts of Legitimate Peripheral Participation in Community of Practice (LAVE; WENGER, 1991), Collective Teaching of Music Instruments (CRUVINEL, 2005; TOURINHO, 1995, 2004, 2007) and Collaborative Learning (GAUNT; WESTERLUND, 2013) provided support to understand the process of teaching-learning present in the band, considering that the entity doesnt have specialized teachers for all of the instrumentalists and that the collective work and collaborative are essential to the survival of it and the musical and human formation of its members. Therefore, I believe that this research, with sociological basis, will contribute to the field of Musical Education in Brazil, mainly in the scope of the civil musical bands and musical groups alike.
