A cidade de Dublin, a Irlanda e James Joyce se apresentam indivisíveis na experiência de ler um dos seus livros de uma forma um pouco mais plena. Também assim se descobre a identidade, mais especificamente, a identidade irlandesa, como primordial para a compreensão de sua obra. A problematização da identidade nacional é, no entanto, ainda mais salientada em “The Dead”, o último dos quinze contos de Dubliners considerado por Joyce como um capítulo na história moral da Irlanda. A adaptação fílmica de 1987 é onde Joyce e Huston se encontram e problematizam questões relacionadas à nacionalidade irlandesa. Embora o cineasta fosse de ascendência irlandesa e se considerasse Irishman, sua carreira artística internacional esteve vinculada ao país onde nasceu, os Estados Unidos. Joyce e Huston ambos optaram pelo autoexílio, espaço onde suas identidades nacionais eram reconfiguradas. O arcabouço teórico para a discussão proposta foi construída a partir de conceitos desenvolvidos por Stuart Hall, Homi Bhabha e Benedict Anderson. Os conceitos de identidade propostos por esses autores caracterizam a identidade nacional como algo passível de constante reflexão e ressignificação.This study aims to discuss the importance of Irish national identity and its characterization both in James Joyce’s short story “The Dead”, and in its homonymous filmic adaptation directed by John Huston in 1987. The city of Dublin, Ireland and James Joyce are indivisible when experiencing a deeper reading of one of his books. Also, the identity, more specifically the Irish identity, shows itself as a central part to the understanding of his work. A broad discussion of the national identity is, however, more emphasized in “The Dead”, the last of the fifteen stories of Dubliners considered by Joyce as a chapter in the moral history of Ireland. The filmic adaptation of the short story is where Joyce and Huston meet and problematize issues of Irish nationality. Although the filmmaker was of Irish descent and considered himself an Irishman, his international artistic career was linked to the country where he was born, the United States. Both Joyce and Huston lived in self-exile, a space where their national identities were reconfigured. The theoretical framework for the proposed discussion was built from concepts developed by Stuart Hall, Homi Bhabha and Benedict Anderson.
