Resumo: | This dissertation aims to investigate three themes of Sally Haslanger’s social philosophy, analyzing her influences and the relations with other contemporary theories. This work seeks to understand Haslanger’s reflections on social structure, structural injustice, and ideology, and argues that critical theory runs through the author’s philosophy as a whole. To this end, the work is divided, in a first moment, into an investigation of Haslanger’s social ontology and its relations with conceptual engineering. For Haslanger, society is defined as a complex and dynamic system that has a structure which is formed by a set of practices and social relations. Haslanger’s conceptual engineering, in turn, is applied to the concepts of gender and race and seeks to be a tool for critical theory alongside her debunking project of social objects that are taken as natural. This involves itself directly with a project of critical theory, that is, a normatively oriented theory tied to social movements of struggle against oppression. In a second moment, the definition of oppression and structural injustice is analyzed. Oppression is defined as a structural and systemic injustice, in terms of a positional vulnerability that social groups face. In a third moment, the aim is to understand how Haslanger defines ideology and critique of ideology. Ideology is defined as a cultural techne of an oppressive social practice, being characterized as pejorative, functionalist, and non-doxastic. The critique of ideology, in turn, is characterized by investigating how oppression is reproduced through daily actions in a non-coercive way. Finally, the last chapter considers two criticisms of Haslanger’s work and revisits the issue of her commitment to critical theory as the broader framework of her philosophy. |
