The present work aims to investigate the perception factors that influence the demand for professional master's degree programs in economics in the city of São Paulo. The initial part of the work is dedicated to identifying the historical roots of higher education in Brazil, addressing the various events that culminated in the emergence of graduate studies and, finally, in the figure of the professional master's degree. In this same part, the regulatory frameworks that instituted the professional master's programs at the national level were analyzed, as well as the aggregate numbers related to it. This is followed by the opening of the main data referring to the composition of the students of the three HEIs analyzed in the work. The second part deals with the theoretical framework, namely the economic theories of human capital and signaling, which were used as initial categories throughout the content analysis. The third part consists of a detailed exposition of the methodological approach used, especially regarding the use of the set of tools belonging to the field of content analysis and the opening of data from the sample used. Finally, the identified perceptual factors were presented, and, by means of an inference process, they were categorized and related to the initial theories of the theoretical framework. The reality proved to be more complex than initially thought, requiring the creation of new classification categories for the perception factors.
